“What’s wrong with Cleveland?”

Well lots, but that wasn’t the questioner’s point in this email:

I’ve been reading your blog since you ran for county commissioner and always enjoyed your perspective on the issues that face this community.  I’ve been disappointed lately that you haven’t focused on of your attention to the Breuer Tower fiasco and you’ve said very little about the sales tax increase.

What’s wrong with Cleveland?  You’re writing more about national issues, and it seems like you just don’t care about your hometown.  Don’t you love us anymore?

Keep writing, just spend some time on us lonely folks here at home.

All the best,

Joan

PS: I love your nicknames for people - my favorite is how you call FRED Thompson FRED and tommy thompson tommy thompson.  Calling the big guy FRED is perfect.

Thanks Joan - I needed that.  As always, I return every email l get and only print an emailer’s name if they approve as Joan did (”just please don’t use my last name” - sure Joan , you got it).  Joan and I exchanged a few emails this past weekend and as I’m sitting here at 1:30AM nursing a sick website, I wanted to share with you what I told Joan.

I love this city.  I made it my home choosing to move into the city from the shelter of the suburbs as soon as I was able.  Since that time I’ve spent the majority of my time working to effect positive change for our city and our region as a whole.  As long as I’m here, I’ll do my best to highlight local issues that I think are important and/or are not getting enough attention (like the recent eminent domain debacle).

Specifically, I haven’t talked about the Breuer building, because I frankly don’t care for it.  I’m more appalled by the waste of a prime location in our financial district for use by the county.  They do not need to move their offices (the existing county building was designed to be expanded upward), and by moving to East 9th Street the commissioners will effectively be driving a stake through the heart of our once soaring but now struggling financial district.  This was an issue I talked about at length during the commissioner’s endorsement interview with the fishwrap and they looked at me like I was crazy.  So why waste the time… and anyway, there are plenty of folks out there better qualified and more passionate to carry the save the Breuer argument.

As for the sales tax increase - I’ve told you that I’m against it.  I applaud Councilman Zack Reed and his new compatriots in the CuyCo GOP who are floating the idea of a petition to put it on the ballot, but it would require an unvbelievable effort on the part of the party (and you know my level of faith in the organization is weak at best).  The inevitability of the stupidity by the elected leadership in this county is ridiculous, but what’s even more criminal is that we the people allow them to continue to reign.

Finally as I told Joan, I’m spending more time on national issues and candidates because that’s who’s reading this page.  75% of our readership is coming from outside of Ohio and well - the traffic goes up on national issues… it would be foolish for me to ignore that.  And besides, I already know what’s happening here (it already happened ten years ago and it’ll happen again tomorrow).

As always, please keep reading and don’t hesitate to drop me a line (or make a comment).
