Jim Gilmore announces National Property Rights Initiative

Today former Virginia governor and 2008 GOP presidential candidate announced his National Property Rights Initiative during a speech at the National Taxpayers Union national conference in Washington DC.

A candidate for president who gets it!  People keep asking me why I’m so high on governor Gilmore and this is just another reason.  Property rights and the threat of eminent domain are a H-U-G-E issue with me (just look at what we’ve been going through here in Cleveland with the Flats East Bank debacle).

Kudos to the governor for an initiative that gets to the heart and soul of what America is all about.

Our most precious and fundamental liberties are in danger. The Founding Fathers believed the right to one’s property was an “inherent right” endowed by God, and enshrined that right in the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution.Unfortunately, activist judges and government bureaucrats have eroded this fundamental right over time. In the Kelo v. New London decision, the Supreme Court rewrote the Constitution to allow government to seize your property and hand it over to private developers.Jim Gilmore believes it is past time for the federal government to become a protector – not a violator – of Americans’ precious liberties.Jim Gilmore’s National Property Rights Initiative

Property rights will be a major priority in Jim Gilmore’s administration. As President, he will:

  • Nominate judges who will strictly interpret the Constitution, rather than making policy from the bench.
  • Appoint a Special Assistant within the White House who will advise the President and oversee the Commission’s recommendations.
  • Reissue President Reagan’s Executive Order 12630, which directs federal agencies to “first do no harm” to property rights when writing regulations.
  • Require the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and other affected cabinet members to issue regular reports to the President on the state of property rights in America.
  • Name a Presidential Commission on Property Rights, which will evaluate the state of property rights in America and craft policy recommendations to the President and Congress that will strengthen protections for property owners.

This is good stuff. I really think there’s an opportunity for Gilmore to start talking about ideas in this race. Nobody else is.
