First thoughts on tonight’s GOP debate…

errr… CPC.

I watched the program on mcNBC in conjunction with a Right Angle Blog live chat - and that is definitely the way to do it. Kudos to Matt at RAB for putting it together. Since Matt’s much better with the tech stuff I’ll talk with him about expanding and improving this for future activities.

Without a doubt, the watch word tonight was gravitas. There was more testosterone on that stage in the first 30 minutes than in the entire Democratic party put together. These guys were all trying to out tough guy one another… which plays well with the base, but what about the rest of the country (and for that matter internationally).

This approach looks great to the GOP, but will not play well with the average American.

The other big item tonight - the number of candidates who through a show of hands indicated that they do not believe in evolution. I didn’t have the chance to note who or how many, but the fact that any of them (except for Brownback) said they didn’t believe in it was shocking.

Interesting how the name Bill Clinton tonight brought out an immediate focus on the concept of Hillary getting elected president. The venom was thick as each candidate lined up to denounce the potential of her as Chief Executive.

Finally, in contrast to how well Brian Williams did in controlling the Democrats last week, the candidates walked all over Matthews tonight (which was worth watching on its own merit).

No major shockers. McCain looked too scripted, but seemed to be busting at the seams of his handlers - he looks to be getting back to what makes him the Maverick, but he’s not there yet. Giuliani did fine. Romney did well (and may have been the winner).

That’s all I’ve got tonight. More in the morning post.
