A Mormon primer
In vacillating on my feelings about the Republican candidacy of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, I’ve posted about the potential of this campaign serving as nothing more than preparation for 2012, I’ve talked about the origins of his early money successes and his faith, and I’ve discussed his robot-like campaign behaviors. Each one of these posts has generated a decent amount of reader mail.
The responses I’ve received from readers have been mostly favorable about his run with an almost universally unspoken (unwritten) concern - his Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) faith - as is evidenced by this line:
“…I’m just not sure if he’s Christian enough…”
As I’ve said previously, I’ve had some limited interaction with those who consider Salt Lake City the center of their theological universe and my experience has been good. I don’t presume to know a great deal about the Mormon faith (though I do own a copy of the Book of Mormon that was given to me by a former professional associate - BTW I have actually read portions of it), but I think that like most organized religions there is some truth and some fantasy associated with LDS foundations.
For those of you who are interested in learning more about the Mormon church, PBS just ran an incredibly insightful two night program in its Frontline / American Experience series called The Mormons you can view the entire program here.
Ironic on its timing…
