Nappy headed hoes

FIRE THE HOST!
Background for those of you not paying attention (like me by the way… even though I listen to Imus in the morning a couple of times each week, I did not know about this controversy until Thursday and even then I thought it was minor). In the most bizarre of coincidences, I posted this short item on Friday not understanding the wider circumstances.
I thought I might let this thing slide, but then this morning I got this email:
The only thing whiter then your skin is the sheat that you wear! Your support of Imus shows you don’t understand the struggle. Your a hater! (misspelllings and grammatical errors left in place to humiliate the writer).
Well, now that I’ve been called out on the carpet as a racist and enlisted in this “struggle” with one of my heroes (Imus)…
As I am writing this I am listening to the Reverend Al Sharpton show heard locally on 1300 WERE. Sharpton is leading the call among African American leaders for Imus’ firing. Sharpton invited Imus to his show to discuss the issue. Prior to Imus arriving at the studio, Sharpton has had a cavalcade of African American journalists and leaders on the air demanding Imus’ immediate termination.
What a load of crap. While I’m listening to the show, I’m thinking about this video that Mansfield Frazier sent to me over the weekend -
and boiling with rage at the hypocrisy that Reverend Al espouses. Isn’t this the same Reverend Al of Tawana Brawley fame? Isn’t this the same Reverend Al who ran for president in 2004 just so he could make a few bucks? Isn’t this the same Reverend Al that took money in an illicit drug laundering scheme? How is it that I’m even discussing this? Al Sharpton is an entertaining charlatan at best and an incredibly dangerous rabble rouser at worst. Reverend Al you denigrate the quality of your community by your own actions.
So Don Imus called the Rutgers women’s basketball team a bunch of “nappy headed hoes”? Yes, it was uncalled for. Insensitive - yes. Wrong - yes. Inexcusable - yes… and he has not excused the comment. He’s also made numerous efforts to apologize for his remarks - all of which have gone unheeded. Additionally he prefaced his (self-proclaimed) ignorant remark by talking about how the appearance of the girls was somewhat scary because they were covered with tatoos.
Hey, here ’s a newsflash: big physical people, whether they are white or black, male or female with tatoos all over their bodies are scary. I have friends who have tatoos. Some have lots of them. And often they appear scary. I think they deface themselves and cheapen their own appearance, which means to me that they make themselves out to be …. hoes.
Imus said they looked like “nappy-headed” hoes. His indiscretion was to address their hairdos. Yes he made light of their appearance (something they cannot control nor should be criticized for), but something tells me that if the women had been white and they had big hair, he would have called them “big haired” hoes. If that had happened I wonder if white people everywhere would be calling for his ouster.
NO. In fact, this is the same Don Imus who…
had this on his show, and this on his show, and this on his show, and this on his show, and this on his show, and this on his show, and this on his show
and none of the offendees called for his ouster. Why? because that’s his show.

Additionally, Imus has shown contrition. I don’t think I even have to go into the volume of good works this man has done and Sharpton has the nerve to call him out. Give me a break!
Sharpton asked Imus, “how can you devalue them?”
I’ve got a question Reverend Al. How is it that as a leader in your community you allow your beautiful young women to devalue themselves with tatoos?
What have you done for your community Reverend Al besides pointing the finger of blame? Maybe you should look in the mirror instead of hunting for racists in the mist.

I don’t care about Al Sharpton and his pass. It’s not about him!! It’s about Don Imus’s and his dispectable comments towards women!! Keep your ey e on the ball.

Ahmen Brother. Al is a racist bastard. Nappy refers to someones hair and Ho refers to someone’s sexual preferances. Niether statement has anything to do with race.
April 12th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
I agree that what imas said was completely uncalled for but there has been worse said in the public eye about all racist. If i can recall we have a freedom of speech and if u get persicted for saying things then whats the good of the right? I think imas should have gotten some suspestion or something to help him learn his lesson but i think firing him is taking it to far. i would be different if he called them the n word or something but what he said isnt half as bad as what we call out women in the rap songs so i think everyone should just leave it alone and stop making a big deal out of it
April 12th, 2007 at 4:40 pm
Stupid-yes Racist-NO! Al sharpton needs to step back and take a look at what he’s saying first off. I think this is just another way of putting the blame on racism,Does Al have anything to say about the rappers using those same words in their lyrics NO! But now he’s quick to bring it up when it comes from a white mans mouth? How ridiculous…And he wants to run for president of the United States????? What next? Maybe someone should tape Al to a chair and let him listen to rap music for a while!
April 12th, 2007 at 5:08 pm
THANK you! No, this was not racist. This was an objective statement about general appearance. There has been SO MUCH WORSE said or written that could be attacked. Why this? Maybe because Imus has made it a personal goal to point out the hypocrisy in the lives of those who use the race issue to further their own personal agendas.
If so, watch out Limbaugh. Watch out Stern. Your jobs are next.
I want to know where the ACLU is on this. Why isn’t there a party of people chanting “freedom of speech”! Because, apparently, you’re only free to say what the liberals want to hear.
God, I hate hypocrisy…
April 12th, 2007 at 5:33 pm
This has taken ‘dramatic’ to a new level. The Rutgers basketball team will soon get over this. Don Imus, on the other hand, is losing his livelihood. All this because of Al Sharpton and his big ego, big butt and big mouth….Stop the violins now, please.
April 12th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
What a BIG deal really…why doesn’t media focus on Bush’s lies and racist behavior and all the garbage they throw at people? …He screwed up…Get over it..
April 12th, 2007 at 7:28 pm
Nappy headed hoe’s is not a racist comment. Only because they are black are they making a big deal about it. Say the line I wouldn’t dance with you even if you didn’t look like a saber tooth tiger. Bitch! to a black person and that’s considered racist in their eyes even though it really isn’t. Everyone is tired of their own lame ass life they have to create problems for someone else just for kicks. The Rev should be able to forgive IMUS because GOD would and by him not doing so he is a sinner.
April 12th, 2007 at 10:13 pm
I would like to you to read some lyrics to Snoop Doggs
“Ain’t No Fun (If The Homies Can’t Have None)”. I am offended by this and He should loose his job also. Why the double standerd. If a white guy listens to this crap and sings it is he vulerable to fighting a black man but across the street a black man is singing the same song with his posse and thats okay. I think black people got the problem. They feel the white man owes them. Let me remind them that slaverywas not in our generation so get on with your life.

Whatcha see D, w-w-w-whatcha see D
I see some bald headed hoes
Bald Head Hoes
Whatcha see D, w-w-w-whatcha see D

[Verse 2]
There should be a crime against bald head hoes
Why they want to be bald
Nobody knows
Being bald makes a gal look like a beast
Stupid ass hoes ain’t ya heard of grease

The meanest ass hoes I ever seen
Ain’t got no hair so they act crude
And wanna go and pick a fight with the girls who do
Am I right? (you right)
Hell yeah Im right
Ive seen this shit night after night
Instead of wearin other peoples hair you dumbass bitch
You need to buy some dog mane and grow you own damn shit
Chorus
[Verse 3]
Now I just can’t go with a bald head hoe
You ain’t gotta ask why for me to tell you so
If I cant run through her hair with my hand
Somehow it seems like I be fucking a man
So stay away you bold hickies
I know you out there
Talkin to you hoes who ain’t got no hair
Your sister bald Zanny
Your mamma bald Eddie
I bet you even got a bald headed ass granny
Chorus
(talking)
Now this is how you spot a bald headed hoe
[Verse 4]
Hair spots on a hot sunny day
Too many gaps in the scalp is a dead giveaway
I saw no hair Clair
Yesterday on the cut
Today I saw the girl her hair was down to her butt
I hope that she now, that I know it aint real
But I wont squeal not even on Andrea
Kim, Shawn or Merylinn
Nor Tamika and Rika the famous bald head twins
Something must be done
About these citizens
You ask
what will I do to support my fellow man?
Im proposing a bill
To capital hill
To kill all bald headed women at will
Chorus X2

Blacks are their own worst enemy. They demand respect, yet listen to the rap crap they call music. When blacks have their own neighborhood, they call it culture; If whitey has his own neighborhood, they call it racist. Get off welfare, get a job, and stop listening to Snoop Dog shit.
April 13th, 2007 at 7:42 am
I find it very interesting how some people on this blog can without reservation determine that the comments made were not racist.
Well, since some of you “feel” it’s not racist then it must not be, by the way; the Ku Klux Klan doesn’t “feel” and has never “felt” they were racist either and still justify thier philosophy just as easily as some of comments typed and posted here.
Don Imus used words that he himself admitted that were “stupid”, this was not the first time and not only toward blacks but other ethnic races as well. Does it make it okay to use derogatory comments against a race of people because a rapper or comedians does it first, who’s next?
Stop making excuses and face reality, racism is still alive in america and whether you “feel” it or not, people make racist comments.
April 13th, 2007 at 7:49 am
[…] I’ve been getting a lot of traffic on the post that started my week long rant about Don Imus and the Rutgers basketball team (if you’ve been living under a rock for the last week and a half go here, here, here, here, here and here to get the backstory). The post’s title was “Nappy Headed Hoes” and of all the emails I received, this one is by far my favorite - Dear Sir: […]
April 13th, 2007 at 8:48 am
What do rap lyrics have to do with the statements made by Imus. Women who appear in videos wearing revealing clothes and bending over should be referred to as hoes. Young women in college, playing sports, doing something positive with their lives should not be referred to as hoes.
And in response to this comment from above:
“Blacks are their own worst enemy. They demand respect, yet listen to the rap crap they call music. When blacks have their own neighborhood, they call it culture; If whitey has his own neighborhood, they call it racist. Get off welfare, get a job, and stop listening to Snoop Dog shit”.
Don Imus may not be a racist but you definately are. To make the assumption that all black peoople are jobless, on welfare, and listen to Snoop Dog is the definition of ignorant.
April 13th, 2007 at 9:09 am
Ok, lets censer every rap song. Because they all have “Hoes” in them. And lets fire every black comedian because they say hoes all the time. But let a white guy say it and it’s unexcusable. Black people grow up. Get a life. Quit calling yourself these names and maybe they wouldn’t be repeated. Oh, I forgot. It a black this. Kiss my butt.
April 13th, 2007 at 9:17 am
First off John…I do not see how you can use an analogy involving the Ku Klux Klan with this discussion. I would say the Ku Klux Klan is a little more serious than a radio host making a statement like “nappy headed hoes”. Second…you said does it make it ok if rappers use it first? How about when it is used over and over again. It is not a one time thing, therefore it has quickly turned into a double standard. This is a joke, he shouldn’t have said it but give me a break…now hes considered a racist. Get off your high horse…
April 13th, 2007 at 9:30 am
Look, dem chicks on the Rutgers basketball team ARE some nappy headed hoes. Have you looked at dem? Some of dem haven’t seen a hot comb in ages!!!!!
April 13th, 2007 at 10:10 am
Is “dem” a word?!
April 13th, 2007 at 10:12 am
the news media makes me sick. i hate the fact that anna nicole smith got so much coverage, god, who the hell care about that bitch! and now the endless imus debate. uggh
April 13th, 2007 at 10:45 am
Before we go headlong into the discussion of how bad of a person Imus is, should we not first look for the source of this cancer and then apply blame where it truely belongs. In the past 5 years it has become popular (although I don’t know why)for young whites to act like immulate and follow blacks that they preceive to be successful as a result of all the glitz and glamour that the music industry displays. Black rappers invented abused and saturated america with all the deplorable remarks copied by imus. Then the first “wanna be” m&m started copying the black style of degrading women (including his own mom). The black rappers fashioned and made popular calling women “hoes” “bitches” and many other unacceptable names which have now become “common place” in our society. From my perspective all that imus is really guilty of (which is thoroughly shameful) is acting like a “wanna be” as if he were some 17 year old white kid who was simply trying to fit in with the younger generation by spewing their type of “acceptable lingo” which (as stated before) has unfortunately become common place in our society. So for all of you whites out there up in arms over this issue, I would say, stop acting like “wanna be’s” and denounce rap for what it is: A platform for hate mongering and a perfect avenue for insecure men to demean women by using horrible lyrics. To all you blacks who are up in arms over this issue, I would say this: It all goes back to the source, if you want to be outraged at someone you will have to look to your own kind and accept the fact that many of your fellow brothers have become quite rich by demeaning your sisters through their abusive lingo and trashy videos. Furthermore, you sisters are also at fault - What kind of self respecting women involves herself in a rap video which exploits and degrades her as she proudly prances around in underwear and highheels while the black male rappers in the video rap about how much of a hoe and a bitch she is. Hmmmmmmmmmmm so who really is at fault here?
April 13th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
Wow justiceforallwhowilllisten I must admit you certainly hit the nail on the head. Most all of your statements were fair balanced and well substantiated. You listed some concise evidence from both sides of the fence. I just have one question for you: Are you black or white? Peace out!
April 13th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
Chris M,
Double standards exist in every ethnic race, he should not have said it, he was wrong, it was a racist comment. climb off your high horse too.
April 13th, 2007 at 10:17 pm
I totally agree justiceforallwholisten. Perfect. Oh yeah, different types of people are on welfare, are jobless, and listen to Snoop Dogg. That’s pretty much stereotyping all black people are doing this. Did you know that my favorite student is black and plays the violin. His favorite musician is Antonio Vivaldi.
April 13th, 2007 at 11:37 pm
It was a racist comment. The only race he could be referring to was the Black race. African Americans are the only people that refer to their hair’s coily texture as “nappy”. Secondly the team was predominantly black so apparently he wasn’t talking about Mexicans.
Thirdly, if he had said “nappy headed” and neglected the word “hoe” he probably would have incurred criticism without losing his job. Immediately upon hearing “hoe” everyone’s mind slipped back into those vile images that are being perpetuated in the media by you-know-whos.
That comment was intended for exactly who it was targeted after… BLack females.
When a Black person says these things it is incorrect, but when white people say these things it runs deep. If I call a Black person a “nigger”…I am not trying to make a friend. It has a different meaning when a person with white skin says it
April 14th, 2007 at 12:38 am
I just got one thing to say. Watch BET on a weekend about 3:00 and you will see THE BLACKS dancing with alot of girls treating them like dirt and most are white women.
April 14th, 2007 at 1:51 am
to sum this whole thing up without making it into a federal issue, this white man is being persecuted for something that we as black people say on a REGULAR basis. Now that’s some funny shit!!!
April 14th, 2007 at 8:01 am
Why is it that this country has gotten to the point that the ONLY time a comment is considered racist, is if it , has been spoken by a white person?
Every day of my life, I hear rap lyrics using the “N” word in almost every verse.
Al Sharpton called NYC “Hymie Town”… But that’s suspose
to be “different” — THAT IS RACIST !
In Columbus Ohio there is a high school that is “Afrocentric”– THAT IS RACIST !
The “Black Miss America Pagent” — THAT IS RACIST
If ALL people want to end racisim they should quit hiding
behind skin color and do something about it as one…
Where the hell was AL SHARPTON when the DUKE University
players were acussed of something a hell of a lot worse than what Imus said…And were NOT GUILTY…
The trully sad part of all of this is that AL SHARPTON
wants to run for president. And the STUPID white people
will vote for this RACIST BASTARD…
EVERYONE, when in the hell is someone going to stand up to
this horse crap ???
IF IMUS is to beaten down because of this, then it HAS to be across the board. For every race NOT JUST WHITES !
We as a people (white, black,yellow,brown & blue w/green
pokadots) are to be acountable.
If you fire Imus, then fire AL Sharpton.Otherwise you’re
a damn bunch of hipocirte bastards.
Yes my spelling sucks, and so does AL SHARPTON !
April 14th, 2007 at 9:55 am
they are nappy headed hoes…so what…what a big deal..in the process of evolution some people still have nappy ape hair!!
April 16th, 2007 at 1:25 am
i think he is an ass hole to mention that. he should not be saying racial things. it was unprofessional and its a good thing he got fired. thank goodness to him being gone now
April 16th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
take a look at hip hop……there r lyrics that more insulting 2 females….hip ho doesnt mean it tho, right??…its like what is a hispanic called when he uses the n word…does he mean it like that???..get the picture..

April 17th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
Thanks to the first ammendment Imus can say whatever he wants, as can Al Sharpton. Whether the women on the Rutgers team are hoes or not is not knowledge that I have, their personal lives are not my business, but their hair is indeed nappy, just as my hair is straight, it is merely a fact. I don’t like listening to black comedians, all they do is point out how stupid white people are, and how they way blacks and whites do things is different. This is typically done by demeaning white practices with vulgar and condesending language. I am not upset about this, I merely choose not to listen to it. So if one does not like to hear what Imus has to say then just don’t listen and stop your bitching.
April 24th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
Oh please, most Americans know that nappy is a term that is commonly associated with black hair and sometimes I’ve heard Jewish people refer to their hair, as nappy. I don’t understand how you’ll can defend this idiot. Anytime, your in the public eye your remarks may be scrunitized. He hung himself, he knew the risk associated with making comments So quit making excuses…The man made racist comments! Yes, he has been making off color remarks for years, but all things come to an end. Also why would he apologize for his remarks, if he didn’t do anything wrong? Furthermore, he never made any clarification that he was talking about the players in general…it’s obvious that he was referring to their race. Also, someone tipped off Al Sharpton about these offensive comments and for all we know that person was white. Race is still an issue in this country…Jim Crow was just 57 years ago that wasn’t that long ago. So why is everyone walking around like no one is racist. There are still white sheets and crosses being burned all the time.
Hip Hop
As far as the hip hop culture, hip-hop sales are 90% based off the sales of white consumer. Most Black Americans do not frequent concerts nor buy as many CDs as their white counterparts. Many whites want to flip the issues and point the finger at rappers, but most whites buy and support the music…negative lyrics and all. So who really is to blame? If Blacks aren’t buying the music and whites stop buying it then how can it thrive? It can’t but most suburban white kids since the mid 90’s would rather blast a Dr. Dre album than N’Sync.
May 3rd, 2007 at 1:33 pm
thank you, Dori!! You said it. I have a comment for stephanie “they are nappy headed hoes…so what…what a big deal..in the process of evolution some people still have nappy ape hair!!” What? So are you comparing tightly coiled and kinky hair to that of an ape? Nappy head is a derrogatory term used to oppress African Americans, a term used to reinforced the idea of African Americans as a species of their own and as less than human. What Don Imus said was both sexist and racist. HE is promoting the idea of hatred of black women with kinky hair and viewing black women as hoes. I do agree that African Americans do perpetuate the sexist and racist ideas by the videos and songs, but we have to look at who has the power. Who owns the media. White corporations do. Currently there arent any television stations owned by African Americans not even Black entertainment television(BET). White corporations are the ones producing this negative images of African Americans. They have the choice whether is airs or not. It is up to Us an in African Americans to educate ourselves and climb up the corporate ladder so we are able to produce those positive images needed.
May 4th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
I am proud of my kinky tightly coiled hair and i would not change it for the world. No, I am not going to use a hot comb to appeal to others who think of our kind of hair as bad and un-natural. I will wear my dreads and get a corporate job or i will become an entrepreneur. God made us this way for a reason and we should not get demonized for it. God made us all equal!!!!
May 4th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
i agree

Tony, i am in complete and undisputed agreeance with you. Me and my brother jsut sat here and read every comment poasted on this page and apparantly you are one of the few that made any sense whatsoever as to what you were saying… Perhaps not all blacks are on welfare or are jobless, but around where I live it is a fact that 85-90 percent of them are. Imus should be able to say whatever he wants thanks to our beloved declaration of independence… Black people see it fit to degrade white people in their music, in their comedy, and in all of their media in general, why is it then that most of corporate america is ruled by white people? why is it that the number of prison inmates have been recorded as mostly african americans? and why is it that when a white person calls a black person a nigger its considered rascist but when a black person calls a white person a cracker, white trash, honky (however its spelled), or a hick (just because they are proud of their southern heritage and like country music) its in no way considered rascist?? doesnt seem fair to me… Yes im white and yes i support my southern heritage, but i also graduated from a high school that was 67 percent black and had many black friends in my senior class… black people seem to be earning themselves these negative remarks, the way they treat their women and call them hoes and bitches in their songs and the way that these black women earn it themselves by letting these black males treat them this way… they are disgracing their own race and their own culture… My brother has a black girlfriend aint none of the members in my all white family have a problem with her, shes great…she herself considers al sharpton a rascist bastard and agrees with what Imus said. Shes watching my type this as a matter of fact… To all you african americans, if you dont want these things being said about you, then quit giving others the opportunity, you leave yourselves open for criticism.
May 18th, 2007 at 1:07 am
I am white and I think Imus should have been disciplined or fired. You can’t say that he is trying to be hip with the younger lingo. I am 33 and am not worth millions. If I were as old as Imus (worth millions) and wanted to be hip I would hire people that would let me know “Hey this is cool or not”. You cannot argue his ability. He is racist. I am surprised that someone with that much money is dumb enough to cross the line. I guess he got cocky. Here is my theory: Don’t judge on race. Judge on character. You will be much happier. Also, white boys: you don’t look cooler to black guys when you try to be black with your “black accent”, low-hung shorts, hat turned sideways, etc. If you are white, act yourself. Don’t try and act like someone else.
May 31st, 2007 at 2:39 am
So now the girls are sueing Imus.. Monetary gain. I guess they really are Nappy Headed Hoes!!
August 15th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Probably looking for money to get more tattoos and look more like hoes.
I don’t find that talking about stereotypes really gets us anywhere in this. I for one frequently wear my pants low, my hat tweaked to the side, listen to rap and head to the club every Thursday. Excuse me being a “wannabe”, but that just happens to be how I like to wear my clothes and the the kind of music I enjoy. It’s stupid to say only black people listen to rap and wear their pants down low. That would be a judge on race.
Also, it just so happens to be that the term nappy-headed is reserved for the black portion of society. Why? Because that is an identifying terminology that isn’t just a stereotype. I’ve never met a white man or woman with nappy hair. So mentioning nappy hair should be of such trivial concern, I mean even black people admit to the nappy qualities of it, there’s really no denying it, and it’s not even like its a bad quality to have nappy hair.
Hoes? I agree that that the tattoos all over a person’s arm makes them scary, but I don’t that that is necessarily demeaning to their character. However, hoes is a demeaning word. Not necessarily to blacks specifically, but to females. To think that the word hoe is reserved for black females is racist. I know a great many hoes, none of them black.
