A tangled Webb

News yesterday that Phillip Thompson an aide to Virginia Senator Jim Webb was arrested at the Capitol yesterday trying to bring a loaded pistol into the Senate office building.

Oops! Apparently the gun was in a briefcase along with two loaded magazines. The weapon was detected as the aide passed through security.

Reports indicate that the gun actually belongs to Senator Webb, but in a press conference this afternoon Webb refused to acknowledge ownership of the weapon. Webb said that he did not want to comment on Thompson’s coming arraignment because the case was an open investigation.

Uh… how about “hey, it’s my gun.”

But then Webb would have to admit that he’s been carrying a loaded, concealed weapon in Washington DC which is a no-no even for the gun-licensed in Virginia Webb. The senator did say during the press conference that he feels it’s necessary to “be strapped” (my term) as a safety measure regardless of local laws. Webb also offered his strong support for the Second Amendment and said that since senators do not have security details like the president’s it is beholden on a legislator to take care of their own protection.
