Review: America Alone by Mark Steyn

This book sat on my stack of unread tomes for months before I finally cracked the spine. It sat there for a variety of reasons ranging from time to a dislike for how I received it (it came as the selection of the month from American Compass because I had neglected to decline its offering in time to stop shipment… I’ve since closed out my membership). So this book sat until one night a few weeks back when I caught the re-airing of an interview on CSPAN (at least I think it was CSPAN) with the book’s author Mark Steyn. I had never seen, heard or read Steyn before, but within 10 minutes of the program’s end I was deeply engrossed in the book’s pages.

America Alone - the end of the world as we know it” is a book that I would recommend to anyone who thinks that we do not have a problem on our hands with the growing spread of Islam in the Western world. As with most books written from the Neoconservative perspective the author at times sounds more alarmist than necessary, but given the incredibly dangerous consequences of the book’s conclusions - it’s hard not to respect Steyn’s perspective.

The book’s premise is a simple one: as more and more of the Western world accommodates Muslims and other third world immigrants by changing our laws and mores to fit the newcomers needs, we do so at our own peril. Using birthrates, history and extrapolation as his backdrop, Steyn paints a picture that is incredibly grim.
What’s amazing about America Alone is that Steyn conveys his doom and gloom future in such a tongue-on-cheek manner that the reader will find themselves chuckling at how humorously he lays out the rational logic of his argument. Case in point here’s an excerpt from America Alone’s fourth chapter Flying the Coop:

Here is a standard Saudi Ministry of Education exercise, as taught in the first grade at that Virginia academy (Islamic Saudi Academy) and at other Saudi-funded schools in the Western world:

  • Fill in the blanks with the appropriate words:
  • Every religion other than _________________ is false.
  • Whoever dies outside of Islam enters _________________.
  • Correct answers: Islam, hellfire.
  • And what do America’s president and the secretary of state and the deputy secretary of this and under secretary of that say in return?
  • The Saudis are our ________________.

Fiends? Whoops, sorry, friends. The Saudis are our friends. No matter how many of us they kill.

I wasn’t sure when I finished this book whether I should laugh or cry. One thing’s for certain I would recommend this book to anyone who asks.

  1. I concur with Wendell’s review. It would be better if he provided supporting statistics rather than anecdotes, but even so, a good read (if overstated) and a troubling and important point.

  2. […] This is just what Mark Steyn was talking about in his book America Alone (review from this page here). Wake up America, is it too much to believe that a new majority could be coming to this side of the pond? […]

  3. If you can only own one Clash of civilization book, this is the one to get.
